Meet Kashmir Valley’s First Woman IPS
Officer – Dr. Ruveda Salam
Civil services exams would remain
the most coveted exams in India. Whether it be IAS, IPS or IFS, all three posts
are equally prestigious. In this year, women had acquired top four positions in
the civil exams and proved their mettle.
Kashmir
valley had its first Muslim IPS officer – Dr Ruveda Salem. She has now been
posted in Tamil Nadu cadre.
Background check:
1. She is the daughter of a former
Doordarshan deputy director general.
2. She hails from Farkin village, a
border district of Kupwara.
3. She has graduated in MBBS. After
that, she successfully cracked the Kashmir Administrative Service (KAS) in te
year 2009.
4. And then, she was one among the 11
people who qualified for civil services exam from Jammu & Kashmir.
5. She was allotted the Police
services and she underwent training in Hyderabad.
6. After her training, the lone woman
police officer was put in Tamil Nadu cadre.
That we have lost out on getting our
first Muslim IPS officer from Kashmir is indeed
depressing. We have no idea
what criteria was followed while deciding the cadre. We are in dire need of
having the first direct IPS officer.
Sajad Ahmad Kitchloo, who is Minister
of State for home is also keen that she remains in Kashmir itself. He said, “I
will check if there were posts available (to allot the home cadre to the
J&K qualifiers). We will talk to the chief minister and then write to the
government of India.”
She talks about her achievements.
She says that she always wanted a
stable life. She also wants to strike a balance between family and career.
She also knows about the problem with
the generalised attitude that Kashmiris cannot be trusted. But, she aims to
change just that. Also, many girls see her as an inspiration. She said, “When
girls see me in uniform they look at me with admiration.”
The state is obviously happy about
the fact that a woman has scaled such heights. That’s why this transfer to her
home is considered. That she gets transferred or not is another thing, but let
us just take a moment and revel the moment that the days are not far behind
when women would reach new heights. Maybe this is just a beginning.
